This study discusses the utility and aesthetics of visual images and sound(scripts, sound effects, music, etc.), used in films. To understand those, this study will deal with the history of films. The beginning of the film and its evolution, as the story telling way, will be also dealt with. Moreover, this study will talk about the evolutionary steps until the type of films today appear by applying sound, which is the topic and core theme of this study as well.
The process and development from Auguste & Louis Lumiere to George Melies, Edwin S. poter, Davis W. Griffith, and experiments of Soviet montage style are reviewed in this study. The process has been not only to recognize films as 'a simple show thing' but also to deliver stories, which means 'the narrative integration style.' In addition, the process have allowed the acquirement of spectacles by only visual images, and fixed self-completed stories. Thus, the visual images in the silent film era could be lingua-franca. The silent films could be shown in any countries in the world without any problems. However, as a new medium sound has been added. It implies complicated aesthetical matters.
Until now, the adaption of sound has been considered mainly as a matter of making films, and the fact that there have been changes in the aspect of showing films and having audience have not been discussed very seriously. Sound has promoted not only directing and editing films, and changing film making styles in terms of the structure. Surprisingly, sound also has changed the way of showing films and the relationship with audience, and the root of accepting the film culture. Therefore, this study closely talks about the things that have been ignored.
A film was born as a single medium and has become a compound one in the process of its development. A series of technological inventions has provided the foundations to films, and although the potentiality of the compound medium 'the story telling way' has been the only main stream until today. The stories, with which people make money out of, contain everything experienced and dreamed through the human history and primal desires that every human will share. The stories also reflect the desire of wanting to speak something to the world, and meet the world with the results of their own actualized stories.
