Reading Tocqueville makes us happy. His words, his sentences as well as his ideas lead us to appreciate the sincerity or genuineness of scholarly way of writing. But this article has serious questions regarding his new science of politics. He publically praised democracy, and proclaimed to take a neutral stance vis-a-vis democracy and aristocracy. However, his understanding of American democracy reveals some of his own aristocratic biases. Tocqueville emphasized that Americans were able to build a strong democracy because of their popular participation being discouraged while giving an upper hand to the able leaders. He did not hide his yearning for aristocratic society by highlighting its characteristic strength which democratic nation is structurally unable to imitate. Tocqueville tried to follow the providential opening of the new era for democracy and, thus, he could say that intellectually he had an inclination for democratic institutions. But he was an aristocrat by instinct who despised and feared the mass. Torn between faith and instinct, his solemn promise to explore new science of politics taking distance from any partisanship could not be kept.
