여성 "공간"을 어떻게 이해할 것인가? : 텅 빈 공간에서 가임의(pregnant) 코라 공간으로 = An Alternative Conceptualization of Women's Space : from Empty Container to Pregnant Chora Space

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문에서 필자는 우선 철학사와 과학사에서 두드러지게 나타나는 두 가지 공간 개념, 즉 절대적 용기 공간 개념과 상대적 구성적 공간 개념에 대해 살펴보고,이 개념들이 사회학적 맥락에서 각각 배타적 힘을 행사하는 권력구조로, 다양한 행위자들에 의해 형성·변형되는 사회적 구성물로 이해되고 있음을 보여주었다.
다음으로 필자는 절대적 용기 공간 개념을 전제로 하여 공간의 이분법적 젠더구조와 자본주의 구조를 비판하는 여성주의 담론들이 아이러니하게도 여성 공간을 나약하고 수동적인 것으로 그리고 있음을 비판하였다. 이러한 담론에서 여성 공간은 자체 내의 구조적 힘을 갖지 않는 텅 빈 용기로 그려지거나 남성적 자본주의적 구조와의 관련성 속에서 그 상대적인 위치가 고정되는 기능적 공간으로 그려진다.
마지막으로 필자는 지배적 공간 구조에 대한 비판을 가능하게 하면서도 여성 공간의 적극적 힘을 설명할 수 있는 제3의 공간 개념을 마련하기 위해 플라톤의 코라(chōra) 공간과 깁슨-그래함의 가임의(pregnant) 공간을 검토하였다. 코라는 한편으로는 이데아라는 구조적 힘을 받아들여 사물을 생성시키는 새김바탕이지만, 다른 한편으로는 무규정적 힘들로 가득 차있으며 이 힘을 통해 기존의 구조적 질서를 뒤흔든다. 이런 점에서 코라 공간 개념은 여성공간에 영향을 미치는 구조적 힘과 이 힘에 다시 반작용을 행사하는 힘들 간의 긴장관계를 보여줄 수 있다. 코라 공간에 내재한 무규정적 힘이 단순히 무질서나 혼돈만을 뜻하는 것이 아니라 새로운 사회관계를 생산하는 힘이라는 점은 깁슨-그래함의 가임 공간 개념을 통해 더욱 구체화된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In this paper, I will first look into two concepts of space, absolute space and relative space, which are dominant in the history of philosophy and physics. In the context of social theories, absolute space is considered as the structure of exclusive power and relative space as the construction of interactions of diverse agencies.
Second, I will show that women's space was understood neither through the concept of absolute space, nor of relative space. Many feminist theorists used to depict women's space as a weak, empty container, or a passive functional place, which carries nothing but the dominant norm like capitalism or phallogocentrism.
Finally, I will suggest the pregnant chora space as an alternative concept for women's space. Plato's concept of chora can be interpreted as a space in which structural and anti-structural power coexist and interact. So, with this concept, I can explain not only the phallogocentric structure that has a great influence on women's space, but the intrinsic capacity of women's space to transform it. Moreover, Gibson-Graham s concept of the pregnant space gives us a possibility to interpret the anti-structural power of chora as a productive power that builds new social relations.
