Theory of mind is a capacity for making inferences our own and others' view or mind set, and for understanding the relationship between experiences, internal states and behaviors. It is also a necessary ability to maintain a successful social life. That is to say, this capacity for inferring what others think, feel, wish, want, intend, and believe plays a critical role for human social interactions.
Theory of mind has been lively reported in foreign studies since 1980's, but domestic researches have not been interested in theory of mind until recent years. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate the ongoing research patterns, future research directions, and educational implications for early childhood education of theory of mind in Korea.
The majority of studies on theory of mind in Korea was about effects of factors-socioeconomic status, child's social competency, emotion, language and story-making ability and pretend- on the development of theory of mind. But these studies aren't abundantly and have not been conducting diversely in contents. Therefore, studies on theory of mind will be activated, future studies should be not only more empirical and practical in various fields but also be in depth.
