After the death of King Gogukcheon in the late second century A.D., Balgi defied Queen Wu's suggestion of levirate, since he regarded it as adultery, which also inconsistent with the principle of exogamy. The adultery was a crime and the exogamy principle should be observed in the Koguryo royal family at the stage of confederated kingdom. The levirate between King Sansang and the Queen Wu represents the historical event that happened during the development of Koguryo from the confederated kingdom to the centralized aristocratic state. In other words, the levirate represents the transitional situation from Kingship succession between brothers (younger brother succeeding older brother) to the father to son succession based on strengthened kingship from the reign of King Sansang. On the other hand, polygamous custom along with punishment of jealousy emerged in the royal family marriage, which in turn represents King's strategy to keep Yeonnabu Queen's family in check.
