It can be said that the exhibition industry of Korea is just on the initial stage. The advanced countries have implemented the infrastructure for the trade exhibitions and conducted the systematic researches for several years with the earlier recognition on the importance of the exhibition industry. On the basis of such researches, they have been holding the global exhibitions. Furthermore, their high quality exhibitions provide the trading places for the exporters and visitors of exhibitions and accordingly generate the ripple
effects on the economic growth and relevant industries in their own countries.
Korea prepared the legal foundation to cultivate the tradeexhibition industry by establishing the laws and regulations related to the formation of trade infrastructure in 1998 with the recognition on the importance of exhibition industry. Moreover, Korea has been strengthening the systems to support the exhibition industry by establishing the Association of Korean Exhibition Industries.
While the mid-size and large exhibitions become available through the Goyang Exhibition Center, Gwangju Exhibition Center and Changwon Exhibition Center to open in 2005 for securing the sufficient exhibition places, over 80% of major exhibitions are held around the metropolitan areas so that the utilization of local exhibition centers has been limited. For solving such a problem, it is necessary to implement the systematic cooperative system between the local governments and exhibition organizers and exploit the local exhibitions according to the local features. Additionally, the local governments need to make the continuous efforts and provide the tax benefits for the local exhibitions in consideration on the effects of local exhibitions in inducing the increase of production in the local economies.
Furthermore, the quality of exhibitions will be improved by the institutional regulations and integration to control the industries from recklessly holding the similar kinds of exhibitions as well as by the cultivation
of exhibition industry.
The exhibition organizers are limited in their abilities to hold the quality exhibitions and induce the overseas companies and buyers because they are lack of the capability for the fund raising, planning and marketing as well as the international network. For dealing with such limits, it is required for the exhibition organizers to jointly hold the exhibitions for the large-scale exhibitions and to systemize them. Moreover, it is also necessary to cultivate and specialize the human resources through the field focused educations and to bring up the exhibition specialists by entrusting the education to the major exhibition organizers or exhibition center operators in the advanced countries. Finally, if required, it is desirable to learn the exhibition businesses by commissioning certain exhibitions to the overseas exhibition organizers(e.g. ISM in Germany) and to hold the exhibitions by modifying and supplementing the exhibitions to be suitable for the circumstances in Korea in the future.
The exhibition industry will be the dynamic industry creating the high added values of the next generation in the 21stcentury. The promotion of exhibition industry will create the substantial ripple effects for the economy and expansion of exports in Korea. Thus, the government and relevant organizations need to continuously pay attentions on and make every effort for the exhibition industry.
