For the morphological study of dexamethasone upon adrenal cortex, dexamethasone was injected intramuscularly into the leg of the ICR mice by the dose of 100 ㎍/day and 500 ㎍/day for 10 days, and observed the morphological changes of the adrenal cortex stained with PAS and oil red 0.
The results were as followings.
1. The total thickness of the adrenal cortex of the group injected ly dose of 100 ㎍/day of dexamethasone was 73.2% of the thickness of normal group, and that of the group injected by dose of 500㎍/day of dexamethasone was 54.1% of the thickness of normal group. Decrease of total thickness of the adrenal cortex of the group injected by dexamethasone was due to decrease of the thickness of zona fasciculata.
2. The cross-sectional area of the cell of the group injected by dose of 100 ㎍/day of dexamethasone was 74.5% of the cross-sectional area of normal group, and the cross-sectional area of the group injected by dose of 500 ㎍/day of dexamethasone was 47.3% of that of normal group. But, cross-sectional area of the cell of zona glomerulosa and zona reticularis was not significantly different normal group from the injected group.
3. The lipid droplets of the zona fasciculata of normal group were round and the cross-sectional area were around the area of the cell of this layer. Those of the group injected by dose of 100㎍/day of dexamethasone decreased than normal group and the cross-sectional area of main lipid .droplets were around the area of the nucleus of the zona fasciculata cell. And those of the group injected by dose of 500㎍/day of dexamethasone were decreased than the group injected dose of 100 ㎍/day of dexamethasone and the cross-sectional area of the main lipid droplets of the group were much smaller than the nuclei of the zona fasciculata cells.
