배우자 사별노인의 종교참여와 대처자원 및 우울에 관한 연구 = A Study on Religious Participation, Coping Resources and Depression among the Bereaved Elderly

The object of the research is to examine the relationship among religious participation, coping resources and depression of the bereaved elderly. The verified causal model in the current study hypothesized that religious participation and coping resources affect depression among the bereaved elderly, and that coping resources mediate between religious participation and depression among the bereaved elderly. For the purpose of empirical testing, the research data were collected nationwide on the bereaved. The sample was restricted to 65 year old bereaved persons. 415 samples were analyzed. Major findings in this study follow. First, the group difference test(t-test) demonstrated that 1) the elderly men were higher in level of depression than the women, 2) the elderly men were lower in level of religious participation and social coping resources than women, 3) no religion group were lower level of religious participation and social coping resources than religion group. Second, to find out how religious participation affect depression among the bereaved elderly direct and indirect through coping resources, a structural equation model was used. As a result, 1) religious participation negatively affected depression among the bereaved elderly, 2) psychological coping resources and social coping resources mediated between religious participation and depression among the bereaved elderly, but physical coping resources did not . We could get evidence that religious participation is effective way to reduce depression among the bereaved elderly through psychological coping resources and social coping resources.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 배우자 사별 노인의 우울과 종교참여의 관계를 고찰하기 위해 종교참여가 신체적 대처자원, 심리적 대처자원, 사회적 대처자원을 매개로 하여 사별 노인의 우울에 영향을 미치는 경로를 분석하고자 하였다. 이러한 연구 목적을 위해 65세 이상의 배우자 사별 노인 415명을 대상으로 분석을 실시하였다. 본 연구를 통해 발견된 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 성별 및 종교 유무에 따른 변인별 차이 검증을 실시한 결과, 배우자 사별 노인 중 남성들이 여성들에 비해 우울 수준이 높았으며, 종교참여와 사회적 대처자원 보유 수준에 있어서도 여성들에 비해 남성들이 낮았다. 또한 종교 유무에 있어서도 종교를 갖지 않은 노인들이 종교를 가진 노인들에 비해 우울 수준과 사회적 대처자원의 보유 수준이 낮았다.
둘째, 분석 모형의 검증을 통해 종교참여가 사별 노인의 우울을 낮추는 직접적인 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 동시에 사별 대처자원 가운데 심리적 대처자원과 사회적 대처자원을 매개로 하여 사별 노인의 우울을 낮추는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 통해 사별 노인의 종교참여와 대처자원을 통한 우울 경감의 경로를 확인하였다.
