This paper examines the commentary on the Ise Monogatari in the Ise Monogatari Koi, focusing specifically on the term “kogo”(ancient language). Through the analysis of Kamo-no Mabuchi’s interpretation of Ise Monogatari, which differs from Ise Monogatari Ketsugisho, this study sheds light on a new trend in the new annotations.
Through his annotations in Ise Monogatari Koi, Mabuchi argues for the importance of studies on “kogo”, which is related to ancient times, by comparing “kogo” with the language of “later generations” and raising interest in the analysis and a new interpretation of “kogo”. Mabuchi believed that studying “kogo” allows us to read the minds of ancient people as expressed within it, and that we must understand its true meaning. Mabuchi thought that the “kogo” gradually collapsed with the advent of the era of “later generations” and “later times”. Therefore, based on his commentary on the Kanazukai of the “kogo”, he sought to convey his thoughts to the world through the Ise Monogatari Koi.
As outlined above, the Ise Monogatari Koi clearly articulates Mabuchi's position that the study of “kogo” is paramount. It is also thought to have grasped the distinctive features of the Shinjū era that could not be discerned in the Kujū era.
