농촌 조손가족의 세대관계와 손자녀 양육 조모의 심리적 복지 = Intergenerational Triads of Grandparent-headed Families and Psychological Well-Being of Custodial Grandmothers in Rural Korea

An increasingly prevalent family constellation in recent Korea is a home headed by a grandparent who is raising grandchildren. The number of custodial grandparents is much larger in rural area than urban area due to the fact that adult children in urban area send their children to grandparents in rural area when they cannot raise their children with various reasons. Family dissolution and economic difficulties of grandchild's parents are the most prevailing reason for this increase of grandparent-headed families in rural Korea.
In this study, we tried to identify the factors influencing psychological wellbeing of custodial grandmothers and more specifically to explore the relationships between three core family members, that is, relationship among grandmother, parent and grandchild and psychological well-being of custodial grandmother. The data were gathered from 311 grandmothers raising their grandchildren in rural area as a primary care-giver, using structured questionnaire. The statistical methods used for data analysis were descriptive statistics, ANOVA, correlation, and hierarchical regression analysis with SPSS WIN 12.0 programs. The most common configuration of intergenerational relationship in this family is all-three intergenerational members emotionally close or connected with each other. However, 'single bonded' and 'not-bonded' pattern were also frequently observed. There are differences in the factors influencing the level of happiness/depression of the grandmothers. Health status of the grandmothers, the number of grandchildren, education level, economic status, relationship between grandmother and father of the grandchild are significant variables predicting the perceived depression. Economic status, relationship between grandmother and father of the grandchild and relationship between grandmother and grandchild are significant variables predicting the perceived happiness of custodial grandmothers. It was shown that economic hardship is especially problematic to custodial grandparents's well-being. These families need greater help but only few mentioned professional intervention. The results suggest that the triad model helps to identify families in trouble in which low psychological well-being might compromise caregiving.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 최근 증가하고 있는 농촌 조손가족을 대상으로, 조손가족의 세대관계를 조모-부모, 조모-손자녀, 부모-손자녀 관계로 나누어 파악하였고 이러한 3세대관계가 조모의 심리적 복지, 구체적으로 행복감과 우울감에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 한명이상의 18세 이하 손자녀와 동거하면서 주양육 책임을 지고 있는 전국 농촌지역 거주 조모 311명을 대상으로 질문지를 이용한 면접조사를 실시하였다. 농촌조손가족 조모는 경제적 형편이나 건강상태에 있어 좋지 않은 비율이 높았고 주로 친손자를 돌보고 있었으며 대부분(87.7%)이 성인자녀세대의 가족해체로 인해 손자녀를 맡고 있었다. 때문에 성인자녀세대와 연락이 두절되었거나, 성인자녀의 사망 등의 이유로 응답자의 약 1/3정도만이 3세대관계에 대한 정보를 제공할 수 있었다. 연구결과, 농촌조손가족의 세대관계는 조모-손자녀, 부모-손자녀, 조모-성인자녀 순으로 관계의 질이 높았다. 농촌조손가족을 3자관계의 질이 모두 좋은 경우, 두 관계만 좋은 경우, 한 관계만 좋은 경우, 어떤 관계의 질도 좋지 않은 경우라는 4가지로 유형화 한 결과, 각각 46%, 20%, 16%, 18%로 나타났다. 조손가족 조모의 심리적 복지상태는 비교적 낮은 편이었고, 세대관계의 질에 의해 영향을 받아 세대관계가 좋을수록 조모의 행복감은 높고, 우울감은 낮게 나타났다. 조손가족 조모의 행복감과 우울감에 세대관계 변인들이 미치는 영향에 대한 위계회귀분석 결과, 세대관계 중에서도 특히 아들과의 관계와 손자녀와의 관계가 조모의 심리적 복지에 미치는 영향이 큰 것으로 나타났다.
