다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract) kakao i 다국어 번역

Writers may want to highlight a certain part of the text on purpose ― with the hope of the readers recognizing that this is an important piece of information. The intended meaning authors strive to deliver to the readers is often conveyed in the form of ‘emphatics’ in written language. In this regard, a zealous translator is required to identify the emphatic expressions to precisely reproduce the author's intentions in target languages.

This paper aims to explore various aspects of emphatic expressions in English & Korean and to think about how best translators might translate focusing devices in English into Korean. To this end, the similarities and differences in emphatic expressions between Korean and English are analyzed and reclassified as follows: 1) Emphasis by means of syntactic device; 2) Emphasis by means of lexical intensifier; and 3) Emphasis by means of punctuation marks. These standards of classification are based on a comprehensive review of previous research on focusing devices and information structure in emphatics-related language studies.

Chapter 2 outlines how focusing devices are expressed in English and Korean respectively. In particular, the chapter's third part deals with a contrastive analysis of emphatic expressions of both languages. The result shows that English use linguistic devices for emphasis that are not available in the Korean language.

Chapter 3 begins with a number of translation cases on focusing devices, including a concise review of the pertinent literature, followed by an additional study on how some form of ‘compensation’ is used to avoid translation loss. This chapter's second part provides a translation technique in which focusing devices are more available and preferred in target language. Chapter 4 presents a summary and interpretation of the study's main findings in the light of the central research questions: first, how similar and different the emphatic expressions in Korean and English are; second, what translation technique can be employed to translate the emphatic expressions in source language and to reproduce the writer’ intention in target language.

This paper shows that empathic expressions are highly linked to the writer’s will and intention to signal that a certain sentence element is given special prominence and that focusing devices are to take place in a sentence in connection with which syntax and pragmatics interact. Depending on the comprehension of information highlighting in English, translators can choose from among several options to serve communicative needs in the process of translation.
