초등학생의 학업스트레스가 문제행동에 미치는 영향연구: 자아존중감의 매개효과 = Effects of elementary school students’ academic stress on problem behavior: Self-esteem as a mediator

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Objectives: This study examines the correlation between academic stress and problem behavior in elementary school students and whether self-esteem has a mediating effect.
Methods: The study used data from the Panel Study on Korean Children (2018), and a total of 707 students in the fourth grade of elementary school were analyzed. The study utilized descriptive statistics, reliability estimations, a correlation analysis and a hierarchical analysis on the collected data, with data processing done with SPSS 21.
Results: The study demonstrated that there are significant correlations among academic stress, self-esteem, and problem behavior in elementary school students. Self-esteem plays a partial role as a mediating variable in the relationship between elementary school students’ academic stress and problem behavior in these children. An examination of the mediating effect of self-esteem depending on the type of problem behavior showed different results. Academic stress affects internalizing problems, with self-esteem appearing in relation to this to play a complete mediating role. On the other hand, although academic stress affects externalizing problems, the role of self-esteem as a mediator was not significant.
Conclusions: The study found that academic stress felt by elementary school students directly or indirectly affects their problem behavior overall. In particular, the difference in the role of self-esteem as a mediating variable depending on the type of problem behavior in these children calls for proactive support with regard to the environment surrounding the child.
