레오 스트라우스의 참주와 마키아벨리의 애국심

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문의 목적은 한국사회에서 스트라우스의 ‘참주’(tyrannos)에 대한 해석이 ‘반민 주적’ 또는 ‘제국주의적’인 정치철학으로 이해되고 있음을 밝히고, 스트라우스의 정치 철학이 오히려 한국 민주주의와 민족주의가 참주적 경향성을 순화시키는 데 기여할 수 있다는 점을 보여주는 것이다. 크게 두 가지 주장이 전개된다. 첫째, 스트라우스의 정치철학이 ‘제국주의적’이라는 평가는 그가 민족주의를 ‘이기심의 확장’일 뿐이라는 이유에서 반대했다는 사실을 간과하고 있다는 점을 강조한다. 그의 마키아벨리의 애국 심에 대한 비판을 통해, 그의 정치철학이 국제질서의 평화적 공존을 주장하지는 않았 지만, 일국의 패권적 지배를 조장할 의도를 가지지도 않았다는 점을 밝힌다. 둘째, 스 트라우스의 정치철학이 한국사회가 민족주의를 통해 형성된 민주적 열정이 자유의 상실로 귀결되지 않도록 도와줄 수 있다는 것이다. 비록 ‘귀족적’이라는 평가는 받을 수 있어도 ‘반민주적’인 것은 아니며, 오히려 한국 민주주의의 시민적 열정이 ‘참주적 열 망(eros)’으로 전락하는 것을 억제하는 데 도움을 줄 것이라는 점을 역설한다.
