한국 사회의 이주민 담론에 대한 논증적 이해 -이주노동자 관련 신문 사설을 중심으로- = Argumentative Understanding of Immigrant Discourses in Korean Society

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to understand from an argumentative perspective the immigrant discourses that have unfolded in Korean newspaper editorials. Although immigrants in Korean society consist mainly of immigrant workers and marriage-based immigrants, the study is focused on the former. Predicated upon argumentative structure, newspaper editorials imply a certain value or ideology. By shedding light on important elements of meaning such as claim, argument, value and circumstances, therefore, this study intends to gain a grasp of the trends in immigrant discourses and to examine how these elements are logically integrated. Immigrant discourses have the following argumentative characteristics. First, concerning circumstances, they try to deliver a shocking portrayal of the reality in which the immigrant worker`s labor and human rights are violated. Second, their argument for the protection of these rights is put forward using examples of concrete action and comprehensive advocacy. Third, when it comes to argumentative structure, more weight is placed on a moral basis, that is, the safeguarding of human rights, than on a prudential one. Fourth, they have yet to engage in ample debate with other competing views, including anti-immigrant discourses. These argumentative characteristics indicate that current immigrant discourses have been remiss in vigorous, substantive discussion - based on socioeconomic interests - with a variety of ideas in reality while merely stressing moral validity centered on the value of human rights.
