Purpose: This study aimed to explore the characteristics of social communication skills in young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the experiences and needs of parents of children with ASD regarding parent training, for the purpose of developing a parent-implemented applied behavior analysis (ABA) program. In-depth interviews were conducted with four parents of children with ASD at severity level 2. The entire interview content was transcribed and analyzed through open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. Result: The findings revealed three core themes, eight subthemes, and 27 meaning themes. The three core themes identified were: 1) Challenges in raising children with ASD, 2) Necessary social communication skills for children with ASD, 3) Preferred parental training content, methods, and environment. The subthemes are: difficulties in interaction, communication difficulties, minimal communication skills, complementary communication skills, preparatory skills for peer interaction, requirements for parent education and training content, demands regarding parent education methods, requirements for the location of parent education, and demands related to the number of parent education sessions. Based on the results, essential elements for a parent-implemented ABA program to enhance social communication skills in children with ASD were suggested.
