자유교육을 통한 학부 교육의 재정의 - 대학 소멸 위기의 근원적 해법 = Redefining Undergraduate Education Solutions to the University Extinction Crisis

국문 초록 (Abstract)

대학이 사라지기 시작하였다. 원인은 인구절벽, 수업료 동결, 경제침체만이 아니라 대학의 내부에도 있다. 우리나라 대학들은 정부 재정지원사업에의존하면서 자율성과 정체성을 상당 부분 포기하였다. 이 글은 대학을 대학답게 만들어야 하는 ‘파괴적 혁신’의 일환으로 학부 과정에서 자유교육의 수용을 통한 자유학예대학의 도입을 제안한다.
그리스에서 시작된 자유교육은 오늘날 새로운 사명을 부여받는다. 인공지능은 자유교육의 새로운 학습 대상이며 시민교육에서 추구하는 민주주의의 생존과 진보를 위한 역량 함양은 자유교육에 내재 되어 있다. 개별 학문 분야별로 만들어진 단과대학-학과라는 전통적 편제는 이제 그 효력을 다하였다. 학과 ․ 전공을 기초 행 ․ 재정 단위로 구성된 대학 편제를 기각하고 학부교육을 자유교육으로 재정의하여야 한다. 우리나라에서 학부 과정이 담당하였던 심화 수준의 전문 ․ 직업교육은 대학원의 학과 ․ 전공별 교육과정에맡기는 것이 글로벌 차원의 추세이다.
모든 대학교가 혁신을 할 수 없다면, 우선 정부가 재원을 지원하여 시범자유학예대학을 권역별로 설치하여야 한다. 학부 교육의 재정의를 통해 대학의 소멸을 억제하고 건강한 고등교육의 생태계를 지속할 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The university began to disappear. The cause was not only the population cliff, the freezing of tuition fees, and the economic downturn, but also the inside of the university. Korean universities gave up their autonomy and identity while relying on government financial support projects. This article proposes the introduction of a liberal education in undergraduate courses as part of a ‘destructive innovation’ that can make universities more like universities.
Liberal education, which began in Greece, is given a new mission today.
Artificial intelligence is a new learning object of liberal education, and the cultivation of capacity for the survival and progress of democracy pursued in civic education is inherent in liberal education. The traditional organization of colleges and universities created by individual academic fields no longer takes effect. Now, the university system consisting of basic administrative and financial units for departments and majors should be dismissed and undergraduate education should be redefined as liberal education. It is a global trend to entrust professional vocational education to the curriculum of each department and major of graduate school based on solid liberal education.
If all universities cannot innovate, the government should first provide financial support to establish pilot liberal art colleges by region. Through the redefinition of undergraduate education, it will be possible to suppress the disappearance of universities and continue the ecosystem of healthy higher education.
