This paper aims to find out what factors affect the way of designing spatial configuration and of determining object’s layouts in museum architecture, and look into whether those factors still play a role in these days or not. In order to answer those questions, the Natural History Museum in London was chosen as a case study, which is one of the important historic buildings in the museum history. It is because it has experienced in many ways, such as having been separated from the British Museum, moved into the new building in the present location, and most importantly having been led by two different museum narratives. Throughout in-depth literature review and comparative study of the initial layout in 1883 with the present one in 2011, it is argued that the initial layout was defined in the basis of the Classic episteme focusing on setting out an order from a taxonomic or classificatory conception.
Therefore, the spatial layout was used as a means of representing classificatory ideas of the natural history, and as a result it led visitors not only to experience cross-referencing through a small number of long axial lines but also to obtain trans-spatial knowledge from the act of looking. In the present layout, on the other hand, the initial narrative was replaced with the Modern episteme dealing with deriving meanings or discourses from objects, so that specimens were carefully divided into two groups (e.g., show-collection displayed in the front of house and study-collection in the back) instead of the encyclopaedic exhibition. The present spatial configuration is transformed into a great number of short axial lines and a series of strong walking sequence in order to deliver a physical and didactic form of knowledge. These results suggest that viewpoints or epistemes are one of main factors in defining museum narratives, but they are constantly changed throughout the history so that spatial configuration and object’s layout are reorganized as well.
