특수목적 영어 능숙도 평가 및 해석: 군사영어를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목표는, 특수 목적 영어의 하나인 ‘군사영어’를 소재로, 멀티미디어를 이용한 특수 목적 영어 말하기 능력 평가 도구를 개발하고 사관생도 및 장교들에게 시행하여 그 결과를 분석하여 차후 특수 목적 영어 교육 및 평가 연구에 기여하는데 있다. 본 연구 목표를 달성하기 위하여, 연구진은 먼저 군사영어 말하기 시험 평가 틀 및 평가 지침서를 개발하였고, IBT 방식의 군사영어 말하기 프로그램을 개발하였다. 또 2차례에 걸친 예비 평가를 통해 평가의 신뢰도와 타당도 (특히 안면타당도와 구인 타당도)를 제고하였다. 또 영어 의사소통 능력이라는 잠재 변인과 각종 영어 능력 평가 시험 결과등의 측정 변수간의 관계를 분석하여 군사영어 말하기 평가가 영어 의사소통 능력 에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 본 연구 결과 군사영어 말하기 시험은 일반 영어 시험으로는 측정 불가능한 전문적인 구인요소를 측정하는 매우 유용한 평가라는 점이 확인되었고, 응시자와 채점자 모두 TEPS, TOEIC 등 기존의 상용 영어 능력 시험으로는 특수 목적 영어 능력을 평가하는 것이 제한되고 본 연구에서 제시한 특수목적 군사영어 시험의 확대가 바람직하는 데 의견을 모았다. 본 연구를 바탕으로 특수목적 영어 시험의 평가 틀, 평가 지침서, 문항 개발, 결과 분석 등의 활발한 연구 및 시행이 기대된다.

This study aimed to develop a multimedia-based ESP test for Military English and analyze the results of the test administered for cadets and Army officers, eventualy contributing to the field of ESP. To achieve this goal, the researcher develoed a conceptual framework as well as test specification for Military English speaking test, and made the items and the program for IBT speaking test. The reliability and validity of the test, especially the face validity and the construct validity were established by two pilot tests conducted for cadets and Army officers. Using the SEM(structural equation modeling), the latent variable, communicative competence of test-takers was compared with other test results including TEPS and TOEic socres by the researcher for him to expalin the degree of the relative influence of the score of multimedia-based Military English test on the communicative competence of the test-takers. This study found that the multimedia-based Military English test could measure some amount of variance that cannot be measured by general English tests such as TEPS or TOEIC. According to the results of the survey and personal interviews, the test-takers and the raters of the test agreed that the new type of foreign language test such as the one that is developed and administered by the researcher could be of meaningful value once the purpose of the test is to select candidates who possess high Military English proficiency. Based on the result of this study, more follow-up studies and dicussions regarding the framework, item development, and anayses of the results for ESP test are expected.
