The purpose of this study was to develop the marital relationship enhancement program based on Solution-focused brief family therapy theory and verified the effect when it was applied to married immigrant women.
The subjects were 8 couples in which the men were Korean and the women were Vietnamese; half of them were the test group, and the other half were the control group. To evaluate the effectiveness of the program, the test group participated in a six session program on August 4^(th) to 16^(th), the control group did not participate in this session program.
Specific research questions of this study were as follows. First, is the program the effective for self-esteem growth? Second, is the program effective for marital satisfaction growth? Finally, is the program effective in building communication efficiency? The effect of this program regarding these questions was verified through quantitative and qualitative analysis methods.
The primary results were as follows.
In relation to quantitative analysis, first, the self-esteem of 4 couples in test groups was significantly improved. Second, the marital satisfaction of all the test groups was significantly improved. Third, the communication efficiency of all the test groups was significantly improved.
In relation to qualitative analysis, first, self-satisfaction and confidence were specific factors in the self-esteem. Second, having a good time together, expression of love, income, and concern for relationship with origin family were specific factors in the marital satisfaction. Third, learning each other’s language and an increase in marital communication satisfaction were specific factors in the communication efficiency.
In Conclusion, the program developed based on Solution-focused brief family therapy theory improved the marital relationship enhancement. Thus, it is necessary to develop various marital relationship enhancement programs and to expend family life education to help the marital relationship enhancement for married immigrant women. Also, it is necessary to develop various forms of the program to facilitate the accessibility of the participants.
This program has the following implication for further study: It is necessary for more studies to be considered. These studies should include changes to group size, how learning the language is encouraged for Korean and Vietnams, and the program leader’s gender.
