This study aims to examine the relationships among leisure activity participation of people in complex and highly professionalized contemporary society, its psychological buffering mechanism and health including physical, mental and perceived general aspects. To achieve the purpose of the study, 600 subjects of male and female over 18 years old were sampled from all over the country using population proportional cluster random sampling method and the data of 517 subjects were analyzed for testing the hypotheses of the study.
The questionnaires were used to collect data for the eight variables constructing the research problems. The scales for the eight variables were translated into Korean language and standardized through independent sample before collecting the data for the study. The collected data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, analysis of co-variance, standard multiple regression analysis and path analysis.
From the above analyses, the following results were obtained:
Firstly, self-determination disposition toward leisure of Korean adults, their leisure generated social support and health including physical, mental and perceived general aspects are partially different across their socio-demographic characteristics. In detail, male generated more social support through leisure activity participation than female. The young adult perceive more strongly the self-determined disposition of friendship in leisure activity. Highly educated people have more positive attitude toward leisure activity and participate more voluntarily than less educated people. The higher the perceived social class of Korean adults, the more positive their attitude toward leisure activity and perceive more strongly the friendship and colleagueship in their leisure activity.
Secondly, the types of leisure activity Korean adults participate partially influence on self-determined disposition toward leisure and leisure-generated social support. In detail, people participating in leisure sports among diverse types of leisure activities have more positive attitude toward leisure activity and keep better social relationships, thus generate more friendship and colleagueship through their leisure participation than the people participating in other types of leisure activities.
Thirdly, self-determined disposition toward leisure activity and leisure-generated social support of Korean adults influence on their physical, mental and perceived general health. In detail, perceived freedom in leisure activity and leisure-generated friendship and colleagueship developed through leisure participation promote physical, mental and perceived general health of leisure activity participants.
Finally, the self-determined disposition toward leisure activity and leisure-generated social supports such as friendship and colleagueship intervene and moderate the relationship between leisure activity participation and health including physical, mental and perceived general aspects.
