This study aims to conduct a contrastive analysis of sentence-final endings in Korean and Sinhala to develop effective teaching strategies for Sri Lankan learners of Korean. The core objective is to propose a Korean sentence-ending system structured similarly to the functional categories of Sinhala, thereby providing learners with an intuitive learning process.
One of the major challenges for learners is the complex and rigid system of Sinhala sentence endings, which differs significantly between written and spoken forms. These discrepancies often lead to misunderstandings, translation errors, and communication breakdowns. Therefore, this research seeks to offer solutions to these educational issues. Considering the scarcity of prior studies comparing Korean and Sinhala, this research is expected to make a substantial contribution to the field.
The methodology involves classifying and contrastively analyzing sentence-final endings in modern Korean and Sinhala according to their functions. Unlike Korean endings, which are generally categorized based on the “speech-level system” (a discourse-pragmatic approach), this study applies an integrated functional framework to enable cross-linguistic comparison. While both languages share an SOV (subject–object–verb) sentence structure, Sinhala exhibits greater flexibility in word order during speech, which will be taken into account in the analysis.
Chapter 2 reviews the established definitions and classification system of Korean sentence-final endings based on studies such as Ko Young-geun and Ku Bon-gwan (2008), supported by various examples.
Chapter 3 analyzes the Sinhala sentence-ending system. Although Sinhala endings can be described systematically, they do not directly correspond to Korean honorific systems. Instead, expressions of respect are conveyed through subject-honorific nominative markers and specialized vocabulary. The clear distinction between endings used in written language and those widely employed in spoken language is a focal point of this chapter.
Chapter 4 compares and contrasts the two systems, identifying similarities and differences. The analysis examines how meanings expressed through Korean endings are replaced by alternative linguistic strategies in Sinhala.
The study confirms that the two languages possess fundamentally different pragmatic systems. Korean employs a highly developed system of sentence-final endings to grammatically encode sentence type, speaker attitude, and relational politeness. In contrast, Sinhala lacks an equivalent morphological system for such nuanced distinctions. Instead, it manages formality and respect through subject-honorific markers and specialized vocabulary, while meanings related to emotion or attitude are primarily conveyed through lexical means such as adverbs placed before the predicate.
This research argues that awareness of these cross-linguistic differences is essential for effective teaching and accurate translation, ultimately contributing to reducing communication errors among Sinhala-speaking learners of Korean.
