Buildings from the post-war era introduce complications to the practice of architectural conservation due to the specific characteristics inherent in modern architecture. Such complications are derived from the physical attributes in structure and materials, as well as social factors involving ownership, developmental value, stewardship, and options for adaptive reuse.
The study conducts a theoretical research on various positions of conservation with specific focus on modern architecture, while conducting a comparative analysis on various charters and guidelines of conservation by identifying and extracting the attributes relevant to the category of authenticity, integrity, and cultural significance. The second part of the study analyzes the practice of conserving modern architecture in Los Angeles by analyzing the relational structure of the parties involved in the conservation process with special attention to the vital role of advocacy groups such as the Los Angeles Conservancy. By correlating the findings from the two parallel studies, this paper will identify the specific conditions required in the conservation of modern architecture and the role of advocacy groups corresponding to such requirements.
