The purpose of this thesis is to classify the negative polarity items(NPIs) by their properties and to examine the syntactic and semantic characteristics of them. Identifying NPIs is the problem which needs to be solved first before any other argumentations about them. And the classification of NPIs is very meaningful by itself. But there weren't any efforts to classify NPIs. In this thesis I divided NPIs by structural criterion: word type and phrase type. Phrase type is subdivided into 7 types. NPIs are divided by grammatical category: N(P), ADV(P), DETERMINER, P. We can also divide NPIs according to licenser type, meaning type, closeness/openess, productivity. NPIs have variation forms. NPIs have restrictions in choosing verbs and can appear in multiplicity. And there exist characteristic NPIs which can function as NPIs only in special syntactic structures.
