자폐 아동의 분노 발작 행동과 의사소통 능력의 관계에 대한 종단 연구 = A Longitudinal Study of the Relationship between Temper Tantrums and Communication Skills in Autistic Children

We investigated the improvement of communication skills with age among autistic children and how it affects the occurrence of temper tantrum in those children. Four autistic children with regular tantrums were monitored over a period of four years and their communication activities and temper tantrums were studied.
The results can be summarized as follows: 1) the improvement of communication skills reduces temper tantrums; 2) improved ability to look at others and to understand instructions and carry out activities reduces the tantrums; 3) improved ability to answer questions also reduce the tantrums; and 4) Acquiring an ability to express their needs, even in a nonverbal form, reduces the occurrences, and the effect is greater when they use more verbal means.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구에서는 자폐 아동의 의사소통 능력과 분노 발작 행동이 관계가 있는지 알아보았다. 이를 위해 자폐 아동 4명을 대상으로 의사소통 행동과 분노 발작 행동을 4년간 관찰하고 그 결과를 분석하였다. 그 결과, 의사소통 능력과 분노 발작 행동은 관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 다른 사람을 바라보는 능력이 향상되면 분노 발작 행동이 감소하며, 지시를 했을 때 그것을 이해하고 이행하는 수준이 높아질수록 그 행동은 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 질문에 적절하게 대답할 수 있는 능력이 좋아질수록 분노 발작 행동은 감소하였다. 비록 비음성 의사소통 형태라도 적절하게 요구하는 능력을 갖게 되면 분노 발작 행동이 감소하였으며, 요구할 때 음성 언어를 많이 사용하게 될수록 그 행동은 더 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 관찰 기간이 장기간이었기 때문에 의사소통 능력의 향상만으로 분노 발작 행동이 감소되었다고는 말할 수 없다. 그렇지만 분노 발작 행동이 의사소통 능력과 가장 밀접한 관련이 있다고 볼 때, 의사소통 능력에 따른 분노 발작 행동의 변화를 예측해 보는 것만으로도 이 연구의 결과가 의미 있을 것으로 생각된다.
