AbstractsWe have so far considered the change of English Word Order from Old to Early
Modern English. Under the assumption that there must be basic word order like SVO/C
in Old English, we investigated the frequency of that sentence pattern and the deviation
from Old to Modern English. Many historcal grammarians think that Old English Word Order is free. But this fact is
relative to Middle and Modern English, we think. As we studied in this paper, there are
many grammatical devices to indicate the sentence meaning in English. Especially Old
English has various kinds of inflection to represent the grammatical characters such as
the Case, the Gender, Singular or Plural etc. as well as the grammatical functions. So
Old English does not need absolute word order. Nonetheless there must be basic and
dominant word order in old English period. As time goes on, internal and external history of English changed the characteristics of
Old English. That is, Internal factors such as sound change and analogy of language
and external event like Norman Conquest make the inflections of Old English lost or
levelled. As a result, Middle and Modern English needs more fixed word order than Old
English. This fact is supported by the using frequency of sentence which we analyzed in this
paper. On the basis of the results we analyzed in this paper, we concluded that although
Old English word order was free, there must have be basic word order, S+V+O/C
pattern, which is the same as that of Modern English.
