The purpose of this article is to highlight the structures and meanings of maeul-gut of Jeonbuk Province. Towards this end, first of all, this article surpasses the narrow concept of the gut as it is often defined as Mudang-gut(shaman's exorcism). Instead, gut is perceived as a means of fighting against the evil that impedes the human beings from leading stable lives. Moreover, it is defined as an 'act of public good' that is based on the notion of perpetuating peaceful life. This extended concept widens the existing perception of the Maeul-gut, which was merely seen as a periodical religious ritual, and becomes the basis for suggesting a new outlook for the Maeul-gut.
When the Maeul-gut of the Jeonbuk Province is examined against this expanded perception, it becomes the framework for the basic behaviors that take place in the community setting, comprised of one or several towns. It is in rum comprised of basic structure / deep structure and variable structure / surface structure. The variable structure / surface structure transforms and activates the Maeul-gut's basic structure / deep structure into variable structures such as Ritual gut, Labor gut, Play gut, Meeting gut, Military gut and others according to each context of the towns' communal life. In other words, town community continued to set structural framework, activate, perpetuate, and change all the lives of the town community according to the framework of 'Maeul-gut', which is a group action.
This article is significant in that it integrates the existing studies on the Maeul-gut in a new level and that it captures and highlights the diversity and comprehensiveness of the Gut culture. Through this type of research, we are able to newly become aware of the society as a 'process' that interacts by different types of performances.
