      The purpose of this study is to confirm the effects of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) on the improvement in knee pain and function in martial artists who experienced the overuse injury during the martial arts training. A total of twenty adults with knee pain experience during more than 1-year training period participated in this study. They were randomly assigned to the control or experiment groups. The experimental group received ESWT for 20 minutes while the control conduced stretching exercise for 20 minutes. All experiments were conduced 3 times a week during 4 weeks. Visual analogue scale, peak pain-evoked range of motion and Timed Up and Go (TUG) test were measured at baseline and after 4 weeks. As a result, there were no significant differences in post-effectiveness between the groups. However, both groups showed significant improvement in pain and function between pre- and post-intervention in within-group analysis(p<.01). In conclusion, ESWT would be effective clinically on the improvement in knee pain and function, and furthermore these findings indicates that ESWT has a benefit of recovery time.
