This thesis deals with the all-around discussions about Kim, Sa- Ryang`s play Hojeop (A swallowtail). In the first place, it looks over the process of the substitution of Kim, Sa-Ryang`s first staged play from Bulgasari(A Monster to eat metal) to Hojeop. Then it aims to correct ideologically malicious distortions of Hojeop through the study of the young drama troup Jeonsun (A Frontier) and the famous drama troup Nagranggeughoe staging Hojeop jointly in 1945, Next, it organizes the list of his plays and staged works from 1945 to 1950. And this thesis studies Chosen-euyonggun (Korean volunteer army) and the battle of Hogajang in 1941 which was their first fight as the historical background of Hojeop. The story of Hogajang battle where Choseneuyonggun which then belonged to Chinese 8th Army fought with Japanese army bravely was widely spread through the documents and plays of those days. Kim, Hak-Chul`s Kyukjung-sidae (An era of passion), Jin, Dong- Myung`s Taehangsaneso (At the Mt. Taehang), and Choi-Chae`s Taehangsaneu Hyuljeon (A Battle of the Mt. Taehang) were famous works. Noma-manri in which Kim, Sa-Ryang described the information and his impressions of Hogajang battle gave to him many suggestions about the writing of Hojeop. Finally, this thesis tries to study the meaning and achievements of Hojeop through its plot and character anaysis. This play has double plot - the story of martyred 4 soldiers and that of Cha, Seong-Ryul couple. Through the double plot, Kim described the anonymous heroes as Group Protagonist who struggled against Japanese army with courage. Especially this thesis finds out that the character of Kim Hak-Chul who fought and became a captive at the Hogajang Battle and then returned alive from Japanese prison was the dramatis persone of Hojeop.
