This study analyzed the relationship between individual’s self-directed competency development and organizational effectiveness. In particular, this study tested a mediating effect of self-efficacy on the relationship between competency development and organizational effectiveness.
The results of this study are as follows. First, competency development of individual members had positive effects on job performance and job satisfaction. As discussed in the hypotheses, competency development improved job performance because it enhances job professionalism and job proficiency. Furthermore, it was verified that competency development elevates individual’s control over and domination of their jobs, and this gives them pleasure/satisfaction in their performing jobs. Second, self-efficacy acted as a mediating variable between competency development and organizational effectiveness. Competency development of individual members gave them trust and confidence to perform their jobs, which allows them to carry out their jobs in a better way, and to set higher goals, resulting in higher job performance. Also, it was verified that when individual members have confidence in their performing jobs as a result of competency development, they are less stressed and carry out their jobs with satisfaction. Third, the current status of the self-directed competency development such as necessity, area, method, time and cost was analyzed.
Based on the findings, the implications and limitations of this study were presented, and suggestions were made for future research.
