A Study on the analysis of global supply chain risks and the differences in the awareness

Globalized supply chains create a number of unique challenges which firms must overcome. Supply chain risk management is thus imperative for firms playing within ever-changing global supply chains. Risk analysis is an important stage of risk management because it can highlight which risks should be prioritized for risk mitigation. In this circumstance, this paper aims to analyze global supply chain risks and to investigate risk awareness between supply chain entities by further developing extant studies on the identification of supply chain risks. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey and statistical analyses were carried out to analyze the risks by evaluating the occurrence frequency and impact magnitude. The frequency-matrix analysis shows that document issues and failure in information exchange were found to be significant risks. Alongside these two risks, cost-related risks, liner market-related risks, control system risks, and customs-related risks claimed the top 10 significant risk clusters. From a group analysis on risk awareness, it was found that logistics intermediaries aware of global supply chain risk more seriously than shippers do due to their exposure to and experience of risks in global supply chain management. This research has value in suggesting the prioritization of risk mitigation by analyzing the frequency and the impact of global supply chain risks and showing why risk awareness can be different between entities in the supply chain.
