This study aims to suggest a model that uses formulaic sequences to improve output ability. Formulaic sequences are “a sequence, continuous or discontinuous, of words or other elements, which is, or appears to be, prefabricated: that is, stored and retrieved whole from memory at the time of use, rather than being subject to generation or analysis by the language grammar” (Wray, 2002, p. 9). An experiment was conducted to investigate an effective process for learning formulaic sequences. The experiment consisted of three groups of college students. The groups were: elaboration group, pre-output group, input group. The elaboration group focused on elaborating the formulaic sequences in which the students had double-translated the formulaic sequences. Double-translating is a two-fold translation of texts. The pre-output group was asked to create output in English from given formulaic sequences in Korean. The input group completed a reading activity, which is a traditional learning process. Two tests of retention on formulaic sequences were conducted, with the elaboration group outperforming the other groups in the second test. This result indicates that the elaborating the formulaic sequences is beneficial in improving output ability.
