A Study on Kurt Vonnegut's Vision and Outlook on the Civilization


This paper aims to search for Vonnegut's humanism through his major novels to overview problems of our society, along with the absurdity of modern culture and draw his future-oriented vision.
Through his works, Vonnegut describes individuals and societies lacking love. Furthermore, he presents several problems of war, environment, the gap between the rich and poor, and lost of values. According to him, man has lost traditional values and the control of culture, leading himself into irreversible situations. And such a society will end up in catastrophe because of both the blind belief in science & technology and lack of ‘Love.’
By describing this through his work, Vonnegut tells us what we should do to overcome the crisis we now face and suggests that we should be kindhearted, open-minded and get an insight. In the end, when man has the courage to apologize for his faults and look into the problems of society, we humans will be able to achieve harmony, coexistence and coprosperity, making the civilization in its full blossom. In that sense, Vonnegut helps us realize that it is very useful for humankind to love each other and have a vision of coexistence and coprosperity.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

미국현대소설과 포스트모던 문학에 있어서 중요한 작가인 커트 보니것(Kurt Vonnegut)은 냉철한 현실인식과 부조리에 대한 깊은 통찰로써 현대문명의 병폐와 위험성을 지적하면서 자신의 작품을 통해 부조리한 세상 속에서 고통과 혼돈의 삶을 살아가는 사람들을 그리고 있다.

그가 바라본 현대사회는 가치관과 도덕을 상실하고, 세상은 무질서하고 부조리하며, 문명은 방향을 상실한 어둡고 비관적인 세계이다. 따라서 인간은 그 속에서 자유의지를 갖지 못한 채 고통과 상심의 삶을 살아가는 가엾은 존재이다. 그렇지만 그는 어려운 삶을 살아가는 사람들에 대해 끊임없는 애정과 무한한 신뢰를 가지고, 인류가 가족적 연대와 사랑을 통해 긍정적이고 발전적인 삶을 영위할 수 있다는 메시지를 전한다.

본 연구는 작가의 후기 중요 작품들인 『로즈워터씨에게 축복을』, 『챔피언들의 아침식사』, 『제일버드』, 『명사수 딕』, 『타임퀘이크』등을 통해 현대문명의 부조리와 가치관 상실로 인한 문명의 위기와 이에 대한 작가의 문명관을 조명하고, 인류미래의 파국적 운명에 대해 계시록적 비전을 제시하고 있는 작가의 비전을 살펴보았다. 이들 작품들은 미국의 역사와 사회를 배경으로 인간 삶의 본질을 조명함으로써, 포스트모던 리얼리즘을 충실히 반영하고 있다. 특히 본 연구는 문명의 위기를 바라보는 작가의 문명관에 주목하고, 나아가 인류문명을 개선하고자 하는 작가의 바람과 미래지향적 비전을 통해 ‘공존과 상생’을 권고하는 작가의 ‘인간 사랑의 정신’을 도출하였다.

보니것이 그의 작품을 통해 제시하는 주제들은 현대사회를 무감각하고 무기력하게 살아가는 현대인(독자)에게 우리사회의 문제와 위기를 적극적으로 인식하고 돌아보는 기회를 제공해 줄 것이다. 또한 인류문명의 방향과 가치관을 정립하는 계기를 마련해줌과 동시에 미래지향적 비전을 제공함으로써 인류가 ‘공존과 상생’의 삶을 지향하는데 큰 도움이 될 것으로 생각한다.
