The present study was undertaken to evaluate the states of the physical characteristics and physical fitness of college students in Chungnam region.
The total numbers of subjects were 307 which were selected randomly in the students from freshman to senior in Chungnam University. Their ages ranged from 18 to 25 years.
Measurements were made on stature (height, weight, chest girth and length of extremities), hand grip strength, body fat (skinfold thickness of triceps, subscapula, suprailiac and abdominal region), endurance test (Harvard step-up test) and pulmonary functions (vital capacity, residual volume and maximum breathing capacity).
The results are summarized as follows:
1. The stature and various indices were comparable to the already reported data and there were no differences among the age groups.
2. Subcutaneous fat calculated from skin-fold thickness were increased linearly with ages from the 18 to 25 years old, and it was linear function with abdominal skin fold thickness.
3. The flexibility (specially in the forward flexion of upper trunk) were decreased with ages and it was linear function with abdominal skin-fold thickness.
4, Index of Harvard step-up test (general endurance) were good in all students.
5. Lung volumes, capacity and maximum breathing capacity were comparable with reported Korean averages.
The above results showed that the physical characteristics and physical fitness of the students in Chungnam region were comparable with that of the already reported data of Koreans.
