Lymphedema is a chronic condition marked by impaired lymphatic transport, interstitial fluid accumulation, and progressive fibrosis. Current treatments mainly target symptoms and do not provide successful treatments aimed at the main causes of lymphatic dysfunction.
This research examines the therapeutic value of exercise training in enhancing lymphatic function and reactivating sympathetic innervation.
Through the removal of lymph nodes and the cauterization of popliteal lymphatic vessel, lymphedema developed which resulted in structural alterations in lymphatic vessels, chronic swelling, and poor lymphatic drainage. Histological analysis demonstrated an increase in dermal thickness, lipid accumulation, and fibrosis. Immunofluorescence revealed a reduction in lymphatic contraction frequency, a decrease in TH-positive sympathetic innervation, and an increase in immune cell infiltration within lymphedematous tissues.
Exercise training significantly enhanced lymphatic contractility, improved lymph drainage, and repaired sympathetic innervation. The findings indicate a reduction in inflammation and fibrosis, meaning a protective role against chronic lymphatic stasis. The findings indicate that exercise may serve as a non-invasive intervention for the restoration of lymphatic function and neurovascular remodeling. Future research should conduct a deeper investigation of the molecular mechanisms that promote these adaptations induced by exercise.
