사회 이론에서 프래그머티즘적 전환

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 사회 이론에서 프래그머티즘적 전환을 소개한다. 프래그머티즘은 19세기 말 퍼스, 제임스, 듀이 등의 미국 철학자들에 의해서 근대 철학을 지배해온 데카르트, 흄, 칸트 등으로부터 물려받은 철학적 문제들에 대한 비판으로부터 출발했다. 20세기 후반 프래그머티즘은 철학뿐 아니라 사회사상, 법, 문화이론, 인지과학 등 다양한 영역에서 부활하고 있다. 프래그머티즘은 존재론적으로 인간을 정신과 육체로 구분하고 이에 따라 생각과 행위를 구분하는 철학을 거부하면서, 인간을 삶의 과정에서 발생하는 실천적 문제들을 해결해 나가는 존재로 본다. 미국에서 유래한 프래그머티즘은 최근 유럽, 특히 독일과 프랑스에서 르네상스를 일으키고 있다. 먼저 독일의 사회학자 한스 요아스는 ‘행위의 창조성’이라는 테제로 기존의 지배적인 행위모델을 넘어서서 행위의 창조적 차원, 곧 행위를 구성하는 힘을 강조하는 새로운 사회학적 행위 모델을 제시한다. 프랑스에서는 볼탕스키가 그의 동료들과 함께 부르디외의 비판사회학에 대한 대안으로서 ‘비판의 사회학’을 제기한다. 프래그머티즘 사회학은 구체적 상황 가운데서 이 세상을 해석하고 행위하는 행위자의 비판적 능력과 창조성을 인정하는 사회학이다. 결론적으로 프래그머티즘으로의 전환은 바로 이러한 행위로의 전환을 의미한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article introduces the pragmatic turn in social theory. Pragmatism is a American philosophical tradition that began with the criticisms on the philosophical problems bequeathed from the dominant modern philosophers such as Descartes, Hume and Kant at the end of 19th century. Pragmatism rejects the idea that human being is comprised of ontologically two distinctive entities-mind and body-and thereby makes distinction between thought and action, and it instead sees human being as an active solver of practical problems arising out of the process of life, putting the primacy on action. Recently, we are witnessing the revival of the interest in pragmatism in various fields such as social thought, law, culture theory and even cognitive science. Interestingly, the renaissance of American-born pragmatism in social theory is found in Europe, especially in Germany and France. With the thesis of ‘the creativity of action’, German sociologist, Hans Joas develops a new action model stressing the creative dimension of human action, i.e. the constitutive power of action beyond the traditional model of action in sociology. French sociologist, Luc Boltanski, with his fellows such as Laurent Thevenot and Eve Chiapello, suggests ‘the sociology of critique’ as an alternative to Bourdieuian critical sociology. Pragmatic sociology is a sociology which recognizes the critical and creative ability of human actors who interpret and act toward their world in the concrete situation. Consequently, it can be said that pragmatic turn refers to the turn to human action.
