17,18세기 조선의 독서 문화와 문화변동 연구-외국서적의 수용을 중심으로--

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to investigate the introduction of foreign books and readership culture of intellectuals who lived over historically fluctuating periods in Chosun Dynasty during the 17th and 18th century. In fact, the demand for new knowledge increased and the readership culture grew up in the process, centering on intellectuals and artists in this days. This study focuses on analyzing the detailed condition of readership for foreign books, and the phenomena and meanings of cultural change which resulted in that intellectuals took the lead at that time. Also, this study examines the process that intellectuals in Chosun Dynasty introduced and accommodated foreign cultural elements independently, and applied to cultural changes.
This study has been conducted on the readership culture and cultural changes in Chosun Dynasty during 17th and 18th century over two years. The goal of 1st year study is to look over the condition of introduction of foreign books related to art, literature, history, and political idea which were separated one another at that time.
The 1st detailed research topic is on 'The Cultural Phenomena in Chosun Dynasty during the latter period through the Introduction and Accommodation of Foreign Books'.
Each researcher studies respectively as follows;
1. New Trend of foreign Books in Ming and Qing Dynasty, and Paintings of Chosun Dynasty during the latter period.
2. The Influence of Chinese Paintings Books on Painting of Chosun Dynasty during the latter period.
3. The change of Reading Experience and Taste of Literary Art about Books of Gongan school that Intellectuals had during 18th century.
4. A Study on the Readership of Kim Songtan's Critique of fictional narratives and formation Process of Novel Critique by intellectuals in Chosun Dynasty during the latter period.

The 2nd detailed research topic is on 'The Adoption of Foreign Books and Establishment of New outlook on the world'. Each researcher studies respectively as follows;
1. Introduction of World Geography Book and Change of Outlook on the world in the latter period of Chosun Dynasty.
2. Introduction of Books on Calendar and Astronomy and changes of the Calendar and Astronomy.
3. Critical Accommodation of『Chun-Ju-Sil-Yi(天主實義』by Realists during 17th and 18th century.
4. Passage of political Agreement about『Il-Chi-Rok(日知錄)』to Practical Science.

During the latter period of Chosun, the attitude of intellectuals who tried to accommodate western civilization through Chinese new culture reflected critical and principal aspect to cope with inner contradiction and change of Chosun society positively. Therefore, their readership did not remain as just intellectual curiosity. On the contrary, they tried to solve the social problem in those days and make counterproposal by reading foreign books, increasing knowledge and expanding to understand foreign countries, and comparing with actual conditions of Chosun Dynasty. this study experts the reflection of intellectuals' actual features in Chosun Dynasty during the latter period, whose attitude was to internalize and reinterpret the knowledge of foreign countries by restricting to simple accommodation of foreign books.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 17․18세기 역사적 변동기를 살았던 조선 지식인의 외국서적에 대한 독서 체험과 그 독서문화를 살피는 데 목적이 있다. 실제적으로 17․18세기 조선 사회에서는 지식인과 예술인들을 중심으로 새로운 지식에 대한 요구가 증대하고 그 과정에서 독서문화가 성숙되고 있었다. 그와 같은 역사적 현실에 주목하여 당시 지식인들을 중심으로 읽혀진 외국서적의 구체적 실태와 그것으로부터 기인한 문화변동의 양상과 의의를 분석하는 데 초점을 맞추었다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 조선의 지식인들이 체제 외부로부터의 문화적 요소를 주체적으로 흡수․종합하여 문화의 변용에 이르는 과정을 추적해 내고자 하였다.
본 연구는 17,18세기 조선의 독서문화와 문화변동을 주제로 하여 2년 동안 진행되었다. 1차 년도에서는 무엇보다도 세부 과제로 분할되어 있는 예술과 문학, 역사와 정치사상에 관련된 외국 서적의 도입 실태를 조사하는데 주목하였다. 이 때 연구의 중심은 ‘외국서적의 수용과정과 독서 실태의 연구’로서, 다양한 분야에서 이루어진 외국서적의 수용 양상과 그 독서층의 성격에 대해서 검토하였다. 연구진들은 다수의 17, 18세기 지식인들의 분야별 저작물들을 두루 살펴서 독서 실태를 점검하고 그것을 통해서 독서 내용의 지배적인 경향성을 추출해내었다. 동시에 논의의 실증성을 확보하기 위해서 외국 서적 도입에 대한 목록 작업을 병행하고 있다. 이것은 결과적으로 2차 년도 연구의 핵심인 ‘외국서적의 독서를 통한 조선의 문화변용’의 양상을 재구할 수 있는 기반이 되었다.
다음으로 세부 과제의 구성과 개별 연구자들의 연구 내용을 검토해 보자. 세부 과제는 문화 양상과 세계관이라는 핵심 개념을 근간으로 설정되었다. 그리고 모든 세부 과제들의 연구는 전체 주체가 지향하는 문화사적 관점을 견지하면서 연차적으로 진행되었다.
제 1 세부과제는 ‘외국서적의 도입과 수용을 통해 본 조선후기의 문화 양상’으로 개별 연구자들은 1. 明淸代 한역서학서와 조선후기 회화의 신동향, 2. 중국의 판화 서적이 조선후기 회화사에 미친 영향, 3. 18세기 경화 문인지식층의 公安派 서적에 대한 독서체험과 문예취향의 변모, 4. 조선후기 지식인들의 金聖嘆 評批本 독서와 소설비평론 형성과정 고찰을 주제로 삼아서 연구를 진행하였다. 제 2 세부과제는 ‘외국서적의 수용과 새로운 세계관의 수립’으로 개별 연구자들은 1. 조선후기 세계지리서의 도입과 세계관의 변화, 2. 17․18세기 조선의 한역서양역법․천문서의 도입과 역법․천문관의 변화, 3. 17․18세기 실학자들의 『천주실의』의 비판적 수용, 4.『일지록(日知錄)』의 정치적 함의가 조선 실학으로 이행된 경로의 연구를 주제로 삼아서 연구를 진행하였다. 연구진들은 각자가 선택한 주제에 대한 연구를 통해서 조선후기 지식인 사회에서 이루어졌던 외부 문화의 도입 과정과 그 수용의 현실을 파악할 수 있었다.
중국의 새로운 문화와 중국을 통한 서양 문물을 수용하려는 당대 지식인의 태도는 조선 후기 사회 내부의 모순과 변화에 능동적으로 대처하려는 비판적이며 주체적인 측면을 지니고 있었다. 그러므로 이들의 독서 행위는 단순한 지적 호기심에 머문 것이 아니었다. 외국 서적을 읽음으로써 외부 세계에 대한 지식과 이해를 넓히고, 그것을 자국의 실상과 비교하여 조선 사회의 문제를 해결하
