The mural painting of a temple coexists with the times and adds academic value and scarcity. Unlike other cultural assets, the number of mural paintings in the temple is relatively small. In the past, many temple murals were damaged due to a lack of systematic discussions on conservation concepts. Since mural paintings are hard to recover if damaged, imitations should be made based on sufficient research and understanding of the original work in preparation for these cases.
This study examined the characteristics of mural paintings of Buddist temple during the Joseon Dynasty and examples of typical temple murals. In particular, the production of a mural replica of Geungnakjeon Hall was analyzed by the Jecheon Sinbusa. In this process, traditional materials were used to study techniques to express a more realistic sense of earth wall painting on paper. This can be summarized as follows.
First, in order to copy close to the original work, natural yellow and green soil are painted before starting work to make them as close as possible to the state of the earth wall painting. The most important thing to consider when producing replicas on the original and other base materials includes the process of color processing the original, which can naturally express the oxidation and partially stained changes of the work, making it suitable for representing the passage of time.
Second, the phenomenon in which the composition is shown on other surfaces, especially the stripping or peeling state, should be expressed in a mural-specific texture. In other words, the relevant data should be accurately understood and the work closely should be monitored to express the situation visible to the surface. In addition to restoring the permeating feeling of the color shown in the mural paintings and the color that is out of saturation due to age, the expression of the damaged part of the murals should be carried out. The process of dealing with the stripping or peeling of murals is as follows. While comparing it closely with the original photo, the process is carried out by painting the material made by mixing the clay with floating water or agyo and yellow soil. When selecting the color used for the murals, inorganic materials through the analysis of the pigments. As the mural paintings are old, the expressions of antiquity and pollution could be reproduced using ink and duck fruit.
As a result, in order to enhance the value and authenticity of the work, including the traditional materials and production techniques of the mural cultural assets, sufficient time should be invested in the basic background color processing before the work begins.
This study determines that this is important in the process of making a replica of a mural, analyzing the method of making imitations of murals in limited circumstances. There will be many advantages to making a replica using the earth wall and further research should be performed to be more active to complement the limitations of this study in the future.
