Dynamics of the Gendered Effect of Artificial Intelligence Sex Robots: The New Materialism Perspective

인공지능(AI) 기반 섹스 로봇의 등장은 최근 수십 년간 주요한 논란과 윤리적 쟁점들을 불러일으켰다. 새로운 성적 장치로 간주되는 이러한 성 로봇들은 두 가지 상이한 기술 혁신, 즉 인공적 여성 로봇 신체와 인공지능(A.I)을 결합한 것이다. 본 연구는 인간과 AI 섹스로봇을 역동적 ‘어셈블리지(assemblage, 조합체)’ 속에서 의미를 산출하며 상호작용하는 ‘기계(machine)’로 바라보는 신유물론적 관점을 채택하여, AI 섹스로봇과 인간 사이의 젠더화된 효과 및 상호작용·관계성을 분석하였다. 구체적으로는 AI 섹스로봇이 성(性)에 대한 인식과 성적 행위에 미치는 영향, 인간과의 상호작용 양상, 그리고 어셈블리지(조합체 이론) 내 남녀 관계의 변형을 심층적으로 고찰하였다. 또한 ‘어포던스(affordance)’ 개념을 통해 섹스로봇의 도발적인 외관과 분리형 신체 설계가 지니는 효과를 탐색하였다. 결과적으로 본 연구는 AI 섹스로봇을 둘러싼 다양한 요소들의 상호작용을 망라하여 성적 상호작용 및 연결망을 지도화하고 면밀히 검토하였다.

The advent of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven sex robots has raised major controversies and ethical questions in recent decades. Considered a new apparatus of sexuality, these sex robots combine two different technological innovations: artificial female robotic bodies and AI. This study examined the gendered effect of and interactions/relationships between AI sex robots and humans from the perspective of new materialism, which considers both humans and AI sex robots as “machines” in that they can articulate and mutually interact in a dynamic “assemblage.” The study analyzed how AI sex robots affect perceptions of sexuality and sexual behavior, their interactions with humans, and other associated issues, such as the transformations of the relationships between men and women in an assemblage. The study further explored the effect of the sex robots’ provocative appearance and detachable body design based on the notion of “affordance.” Overall, the present study mapped and examined the network of sexual interactions and connections through the interaction of the various elements surrounding AI sex robots.
