흥국사(興國寺) 1723년 의겸(義謙),순민(順敏)작 목(木)수월관음보살상(水月觀音菩薩像) 불감(佛龕)과 복장 연구 = The Wooden Water-moon Avalokitesvara in a Niche produced by Eui-gyeom and Sun-min in 1723 for Heungguksa Temple

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

A study was made of the wooden Water-moon Avalokitesvara in a niche which is presumed to have been enshrined at the Guanyinjeon Pavilion in Heungguksa Temple in Yeosu. The following points were made clear through the study. First, the documents retrieved from inside the statue revealed that it was produced in 1723, the 3rd year of King Gyeongjong`s reign(r.1721-1725) in Heungguksa Temple in Yeosu and was enshrined at Guanyinjeon Pavilion. The documents also disclosed that the Avalokitesvara in a Niche was produced along with the Main Platform Painting of Sakyamuni Buddha of Eungjindang Pavilion, the painting of Sixteen Arahats, and that of Water-moon Avalokitesvara of Guanyinjeon Pavilion. The statue and the documents will contribute greatly to the study of Buddhist faith and arts. Second, the sculptural work of Wooden Water-moon Avalokitesvara in a Niche consists of three parts with the Avalokitesvara statue in the center and the water jug and Seonjae statue carved in relief on either sides. It represents a unique design, a Bodhisattva sculpture contained in a niche which can be folded into a cylinder shape block. It follows the style of the Amitabha statue in a niche produced in 1637 and 1644, and the wooden Ksitigarbha statue in a niche in 1689. It is the only kind of Water-moon Avalokitesvara statue in a niche to remain today. Third, the Water-moon Avalokitesvara statue carries a significant meaning in that it was produced by Euigyeom, who was respected as one of the greatest artists in the earlier half of the 18th century and sculptor Sunmin who was active in Yeosu and Suncheon area. Lastly, although small in size, this work of sculpture with the relevant documents kept inside it, provided a chance to examine the Buddhist faith, and the artistic style of the Avalokitesvara statue in a niche.
