The neutron capture and total cross-sections of 232Th were measured in the neutron energy range
from 10 eV to 10 keV by using the neutron time-of-
ight method at the IBR-30 pulsed neutron
booster of JINR in Dubna. The gamma rays originating from neutron capture were detected by 16
sections of liquid scintillator located at a distance of 121 m from the neutron source. The neutron
detector in the form of a battery of three boron counters inserted into a polyethylene disc was placed
in the neutron beam line at 124 cm from the neutron source. Two plates of metallic thorium with
a total thickness of 0.2 mm and with an area of 4.5 4.5 cm2 were used as a radiator sample. The
U3O8 powder with 238U (99.999 %) contained in a aluminium cylinder with a thickness of 2 mm
and with an inner diameter of 46 mm served as a standard radiator sample. The group average
capture and total cross-sections were extracted from the time-of-
ight spectra and compared with
values obtained by using the GRUCON code based on the evaluated data libraries ENDF/B-VI and
JENDL-3.
