I t is natural for the ceramic industry to distribute through ship by sea or river. Therefore, Asian countries such as China, Japan and East Asian, European and African countries as well as Korea have large numbers of salvaged ceramics and there have been studied 14 times including 'ShinAn' excavation and other researches in Korea.
In particular, tens of thousands ceramics of the Goryeo Dynasty which had been salvaged in the southwestern part of Korea influenced new movement in Korean Ceramic History. Furthermore, metal goods as well as Mokgan(wooden document) have found with which has been affected much on the study upon types and formation of the ceramics as well as its circulation.
According to The Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea, it has been proved to be the most popular way to carry on the ceramics was by ship through its excavation background that over 50 percents of the artworks in the Goryeo Dynasty were from salvaged ships. It has been known that approximately 260 main places were in Jolla-do and Chungchung-do, which have been convenient to transport the works to GaeKyung or NamKyung where the demand for handicrafts were high through ship.
It was the best way to carry as much as goods by marine transportation route, in another word, the marine transportation road for taxation, in the Goryeo Dynasty. Therefore, government properties from all over the country were collected in 13 storages, called 'Chang(倉)', 11 of which were in the southwestern shore of Korea and 2 of which were inland, and were loaded on the proper time. This shows that it was closely related that the way of ceramic industry development being influenced to the southwestern part of Korea and the establishment of Tax Regulation and the government control.
That is to say, when it came to the late 10th century and the early 11th century when the Tax Regulation and the central government were accomplished, it might know that the ceramic industry around the southwestern part were vitalized much. Most of these places such as HaeNam, GoHung, GangJin, YoungGwang, BuAn, Boryoung etc were bound with the marine transportation road.
At that time, since GangJin and BuAn had been on the same marine transportation system, they were produced and supplemented at the same time although few differences were found in some formative ways. Ceramics produced around GangJin area where the ceramic factories were started prior to BuAn area had influenced much to neighbored cities by its technical and formative ways. Among them, BuAn was the place where a ceramic factory was not found. Nevertheless, it might notice that YooChunRi, one of small village in BuAn, was the main village for the ceramic development in spite of under the official control.
Ceramics from the salvaged ships, that is to say, which were excavated on the marine transportation road for taxation, were on the road, not reaching to the customers even yet. That is why it is quite difficult to recognize where they were from and they were heading for. It shows how important to study on the producing and consuming places as well as its circulation, which were resulted into the fact for its production and its circulation of the ceramic industry.
