The term Abstract Expression was first used in l9l9 to describe certain paintings of Kandinsky, and used in the same context by Alfred Barr in 1929. The critic Robert Coates applied it to a number of younger American painters in 1946, particularly to Arshile Gorky, Willem De Kooning. Jackson Pollock, and their followers. Harold Rosenberg named the phrase Action Painting. Other terms, including the more neutral New York School, have been used for the extraordinary flowering that came in American painting throughout the 1940s and 1950s.
In 1942, immediately after America's entry into World War II, the dominant styles of painting were still Social Realism and Regionalism. The war created a ferment that brought of the victory of Abstract and Expressionistic art and the creation of the first major original direction in the history of American painting.
Although American Abstract Expressionism, or the New York School, is as diverse as the artists involved, in a very broad sense two main tendencies may be noted. The first is that of the Action painters, concerned in different way with the gesture of the brush and the texture of the paint.
The other group consisted of the Color Field painters, concerned with the statement of an abstract sign or tranquill image in terms of a large, unified color shape or area.
In the mid of the 1940s, however, attention was focused mainly on the Action painters, and most of the second generation were drawn to Jackson Pollock.
In this paper, I selected an artist, Jackson Pollock from the standpoint of his independent characteristics, and studied the influence of his action painting on the fabrics of modern fashion.
The paintings done by Jackson Pollock the mid-1940s, usually involving some degree of actual or implied figuration, were coarse and heavy, but filled with a nervous, brutal energy all his own.
There is no question that, in the paintings of Jackson Pollock and many of the other Abstract Expressionists, the element of intuition or the accidental play a large and deliberate part, and this was indeed one of the principal contributions of Abstract Expressionism which had found its own inspiration in Surrealism's "psvchic automatim. "
However, nothing that an experienced and accomplished artist does can he completely accidental. There is always involved the control of many years practice and reflection.
It is no accident that the drip paintings of Pollock executed between 1947 and 1951 have a common identity and personal presence.
Aside from his intrinsic quality, Pollock's spun-out skeins of poured pigments contributed other elements that changed the course of modern painting.
There was the concept of the all-over painting, the painting seemingly without beginning or end, extending to the very limits of the canvas and implying an extension even beyond.
To study the influence of Abstract Expressionism on the fabic of modern fashion, four fashion magazines, [Colleziomni] published in France. [Bazaar] in Italy, [Gap] in Japan and [Vough] in U.S.A. from January 1989 to June 1991, were selected and examined .
As a result, I could find some fabrics of modern fashion are printed in dripping, pouring and splashing style without any meaning or from. The modern fabrics which printed in dripping, pouring and spattering style are printed under the influence of Abstract Expressionism.
