This study explores how aging urban parks evolve into mature places through long-term relationships with users and the accumulation of temporal experiences. Conventional approaches to park management have often treated the aging of parks as a problem to be fixed, focusing primarily on physical improvements and functional upgrades. Such perspectives, however, fail to capture the unique temporal traces, sensory atmosphere, and emotional bonds that older parks can foster. In response, this study proposes the concept of place maturation as distinct from aging, offering a new theoretical framework to reinterpret the temporality and place identity of parks.
The research focuses on five neighborhood parks in Mok-dong, Yangcheon-gu, Seoul—Mokma Park, Paris Park, Omok Park, Yangcheon Park, and Syntree Park—all of which have been in use for over 40 years. While these parks share a common origin in the planned development of the 1980s, they have since undergone varying forms of change and renovation, making them well-suited for comparative analysis. In-depth interviews were conducted with 15 long-term park users, and the data were analyzed using grounded theory. Particular attention was given to users’ life-course experiences, the formation of emotional attachment, and the connection between specific spatial elements and memory, revealing how parks gain layered meanings over time.
By linking these findings to the parks’ environmental foundations, the study identifies four core elements—spatial structure, materiality, vegetation, and programs—as central to the process of place maturation. The continuity of spatial structure fostered a sense of familiarity and temporal connection; weathered materials evoked emotional responses and mediated the sensory perception of place. Long-grown trees symbolized continuity and vitality, while accumulated activities and social interactions became the basis for shared memory. These elements, layered through time, contributed to the gradual maturation of parks into meaningful places.
This study argues for a shift in design and management approaches toward a maturation-oriented perspective, emphasizing temporality, emotional relations, and sensory experience. The proposed framework offers a conceptual basis for understanding and applying place maturation beyond parks to various urban public spaces. Furthermore, it opens pathways for future research into how the perception of maturation and its spatial conditions may differ across urban typologies.
