국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 글은 8세기 후반 {속일본기}에 나타난 발해와 일본의 외교관계 자료를 토대로 발해와 일본의 외교관계를 분석하고 당시 발해의 외교적 위상을 파악해 보고자 한 것이다. {속일본기}에 나타난 발해와 일본의 관계는 일본의 대외관계라는 시각에서 다루어지고 있는 실정이다. 이에 대한 한계를 극복하기 위한 방안으로 본 글은 속일본기에 대한 새로운 해석을 시도하고자 하였다. 즉 8세기 후반에 대두하고 있는 외교형식을 둘러싼 발해와 일본의 외교적 마찰과 축자도의 이용 요구, 그리고 빙기제안 등의 문제에 대한 면밀한 검토를 통하여 발해와 일본의 관계에 대한 균형적인 시각에서 새로운 해석을 시도하였던 것이다. 8세기 후반 발해와 일본의 경제교역의 실태를 다음과 같은 순서로 고찰하였다. 먼저 일본이 제안한 대재부로의 이용 요구를 통하여 일본이 경제교역중심의 외교로 전환하게 되었음을 살펴 보았다. 다음으로는 일본의 최고관부인 태정관에서 내린 처분을 통하여 발해가 북륙일대의 교역망을 형성하게 되었음을 고찰하고, 이어서 발해 강왕이 제안한 聘期제안 문제를 둘러싼 교섭과정을 통하여 대일교역의 주도권을 확립해 가는 과정에 대해 살펴 보았다. 이를 통하여 우리는 발해가 8세기 후반 고자세를 유지하면서 일본과 경제 우선의 교역을 추진하였고, 대일교역에서 주도적인 위치를 확립해 갔음을 확인할 수 있었다.

In the late 8th century, Balhae advanced her diplomatic relations with Japan focused upon trading. In the previous studies, It was construed that Balhae converted her relations with Japan moving from 'politics to trade.' During the period, it is noted that Japan turned her relations in the same direction, moving from 'politics to trade.' And especially, Balhae and Japan had a diplomatic conflict over a diplomatic formality, which made Japan take on practical policy in diplomacy focused upon trade rather than causing problems related to a sovereign’s message. To Japan, trade with Balhae was a crucial axis of her diplomacy. From this perspective, I have investigated the realities shown in trade between Balhae and Japan in the late 8th century as follows: First, I have illumined the background of Japan in her turnover to trade-focused diplomacy by her suggesting Taejae-bu. Second, through the survey of the measures of Taejung-kwan, the highest department of Japan, I have investigated that Balhae shaped a trade network in the northern Japan. Third, I have revealed the process that Balhae, through her suggestion of Binggi, took the initiative in trade with Japan. Consequently, I could confirm in this study that Balhae, in the late 8th century, consistently had a predominant position in her pursuit of trade with Japan.
