The goal of this study is to prove why so many Korean immigrants became to participate in Korean church during their sociocultural adjusting process. To make this argument, I describe how they come to participate in Korean Church and how these church activities affect to them in their resettlement and formation of their identities in Australia. In this point, I believe that Korean church in Australia not only functions as religious institution but also plays major role to offer social resources which help Korean immigrants to gain opportunities for survival. Besides these positive roles of Korean church, however, there is criticism that Korean church limits the possibility which Korean immigrants adopt Australian culture to become real Australians because of its extreme emphasis of Korean cultural aspects. Korean immigrants in the one hand maintain Korean cultural values through the participation of the church, but in the other hand experience the discrepancy of cultural differences between Korean and Australian culture. The conflicts from these two elements are related to the process of identifying themselves as Koreans.
There search question of this study starts with that is there any special reason to explain high participation of Korean church for Korean immigrants in western countries. That is, I'd like to know the high attendance to Korean church is influenced by whether they have strong religious beliefs or they want to get something else by attending it. Since the first Korean church was established in 1976, the number of it has been increasing in Sydney until now. Some people regard it as proliferation of Korean church in Australia. But I've go to know there are many disruptions among churches, its denominations, and church-goers and conflicts related with ethnic identities, have influenced on increase of Korean church.
The aspect of Korean church in these days is historical results of relation between Australia and Korea, and the life of Korean immigrants as an agent in it. It means that the relationship between Korean church and Korean immigrants is closely connected with the status of Korean immigrants, belonging to social minority. First, Korean immigrants who came to Australia late in 1970s and early in 1980s were illegal residents and it made their socioeconomic status unstable. Most of them came with tourist visa or overstayed after expiration of their visa sand they had many difficulties in getting job, education and medical benefit in their lives because of it. So their situation, which is very unstable, made them participate in Korean church in part. There are still many over-stayers and it causes many problems to Korean society in Australia. Second, it seems Korean immigrants are expected to have same cultural values because of their common ethnic identity. However, there are deep cultural difference between 1st generation grown up in Korea and 1.5 and 2nd generation has been grown up in Australia. Therefore, Korean immigrants have to deal with so much trouble without official organization and they have tried to solve it through participation in Korean church.
The importance of Korean church in sociocultural adaptation of Korean immigrants is closely related with its multi-dimensional functions. First of all, it's been a place as social networking for Korean immigrants and provides various social services. Church-goers can get many helps from Korean church such as opportunities for getting jobs, education of the youth, family and marriage, welfare for the aged, and legal advises of permanent resident ship and immigrant fraud. Beside that, some Korean immigrants want to get position in church as a compensation of fall of social status after immigration. Second, Korean immigrants believe they have no cultural differences among themselves under the belief of common ethnic identity. However, apparently they do have cultural differences between generations, for example, the fact that their first language is different between 1st and 1.5 and 2nd generation is the one. In that situation they experience cultural, generational and identity conflicts, and as a result of it each generation feels the need of Korean church in different way. The 1st generation are tended to force 1.5 and 2nd generation to accept their cultural values but 1.5 and 2nd generation refuse to accept it. Korean church sometimes solve the conflict by beliefs in god. But at the same time some 1.5 and 2nd generation leave for Australian church because of their generational gap, cultural difference, and language difference.
Therefore, Korean church is not only a religious institution which help adaptation of Korean immigrants and a living community but also a place which reconstructing ethnic identity. That is, ethnic identity is not given by birth but continuously reconstructed by conflicts and reconciliations among ethnic members.
