자아탐구의 여정(旅程)으로서의 『산중신곡(山中新曲)」과 「어부사시사(漁父四時詞)」: 공간의식을 중심으로 = Yun, Seon-Do’s Journey to Self-Quest

This article intends to explore the aspect of Yun Seon-do’s self-quest with a specific consideration of “space” and its function. This exploration is based on the idea that the place―specified space which is endowed with geometric identification―confine and control one’s mentality. Geumswae-dong in Haenam and Bogil-do, the composition sites of New Songs in the Mountainsand “The Fisherman’s Song of Four Seasons, ” play a particularly important role both in Yun’s personal life and in his literature. These places, which respectively represent “mountains” and “sea”，affect his inner world thereby acting as a frame of self-recognition. New Songs in the Mountains” and “The Fisherman’s Song of Four Seasons, ’’ like two sides of a coin, can be considered as verbal equivalents to or literary representations of his self-quest.
Mountains, with its height and depth, symbolize sublimity and moral elevation； Sea, with its openness and formlessness, implies the sense of vastness. “New Songs in the Mountains, ” composed of 18 poems, can be categorized as three groups： first six poems with the subtitle “Random Thoughts, next six poems, and last six poems with the subtitle “The Song of Five Friends.” With the symbolization system of the mountains, “New Songs in the Mountains can be construed as a literary configuration of Yun’s mentation of self-introspection； with that of the sea, “The Fisherman's Song of Four Seasons can be understood as a verbal embodiment of his self-expansion.
