Doris Lessing’s 『The Sweetest Dream』 shows family trauma related to the trauma of loss, abandonment, rejection or betrayal potentially or inevitably encountered in the course of a normal life. The family trauma, literally, has something to do with women and children who are living in pain and anxiety because of loss, abandonment, rejection and betrayal by their husbands and mothers and fathers. Furthermore, the family trauma is caused by loss of home, which from a psychoanalytic perspective stands for one’s self or identity. In other words, losing home(s) means losing one’s identity, and as a result s/he can experience trauma psychologically or physically.
In 『The Sweetest Dream』, Frances goes through the impact of family trauma, getting divorced to Johnny, undertaking Johnny’s ex-wife and stepdaughter, and even depending on Johnny’s mother. So does Julia, Johnny’s mother, who regrets not taking care of Johnny when he was a baby, and thereby he always runs away from her. Sylvia, Johnny’s stepdaughter, not only is abandoned by her father but also suffers from her hysterical mother. Like this, 『The Sweetest Dream』 intertwines these personal losses with the family trauma of three women. On the contrary, the three women represent three generations of women struggling to cope with the emotional consequences of family trauma. Frances nourishes her children, their friends, Johnny’s discarded wife and children with meals. Julia supports her grandchildren’s tuition and looks after Sylvia deprived of mother’s love. That is, Syliva is embraced by Frances and Julia.
Frances plays an important role among the people hanging around the kitchen, that is, she tries to listen to what happens to them. To listen to the crisis of the family trauma is not only to listen for the event, but to give time and opportunity for them to pour out their emotions related to the event. The kitchen where such listening happens is linked with compromise and forgiveness of family and, accordingly, implies that in the kitchen traumatized people can receive and give love they need except conversation, laughter, security, and so on.
