Wu Jian-ren, a typical writer in late Qing Dynasty, created 《The New Story of the Stone( 新石頭記: Xin Shi Tou Ji)》in 1905, using the same characters and plotline in 《The Story of the Stone (紅樓夢: Hong Low Mong》. In the first part of this book, Jia Bao-yu(賈寶玉), who disappeared in the last chapter of 《The Storyof the Stone》, showed up again and divulged old habits of Qing Dynasty which had been habitually practised by corrupted bureaucratism. In the last part, the author vividly described the advanced, utopian society based on independently developed science and technology by the viewpoint of Jia. Consequently, he put an emphasis on the social reform of old society. Furthermore, he made concrete suggestions in order to build a new society.
This book employed strong satire to criticize Qing Dynasty using mythology of "Bu tian(補天)". The writer also continued to emphasize the virtue of self-reliance, independent economy in order to defend fragile, corrupted Qing Dynasty threatened incessantly by Western imperialists. In addition to the importance of science and technology developed by independent national wealth, he also believed that the utopian society should be ruled by building valuable virtues and culture.
Although this book is a typical satire novel based on Mei Ci Satire theory, it presents its unique pattern with unconventionally organized descriptions on the utopian society by providing complete political, social, economic alternatives to his current society, instead of harsh criticism. It cannot be denied that the worth of book in the traditional Chinese satire novel owns to his unique imagination honed by Chinese classics.
