After the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the academic research environment has become rapidly digitalized, and interdisciplinary research has increased across many fields. As a result, the number of academic journals and research topics has grown significantly, making it more difficult for researchers to select appropriate journals. Most existing journal search environments provide information mainly in text-based formats, which makes it hard to compare journal scopes and research topics efficiently. This challenge is especially evident in the design field, which is closely connected to diverse areas such as visual, spatial, digital, service, and fashion design.

To address these issues, this study proposes DIVA (Journal Finder), a data visualization–based journal recommendation system for design researchers. The design field was divided into nine subcategories, and paper data from 18 major domestic and international design journals were collected, focusing on titles, abstracts, and keywords. Text mining techniques were applied, and visualizations such as stream graphs, treemaps, and bubble charts were used to analyze major research topics and yearly keyword trends for each journal. In addition, observational usability testing and in-depth interviews were conducted with 16 master’s and doctoral-level design researchers to identify key problems in existing journal recommendation and search processes, including excessive text information, difficulty in understanding recent research trends, fragmented information sources, and concerns about reliability.

Based on these findings, this study suggests UI/UX strategies that support more intuitive journal recommendation and exploration. The proposed platform visually presents yearly keyword trends, the distribution of major research topics by journal, and related domestic and international design conference information. Through this approach, the journal recommendation system aims to reduce search effort and improve decision-making efficiency for design researchers.

This study expects that design researchers will be able to explore and select journals within a more reliable, data-driven recommendation environment. Furthermore, the proposed visualization-based journal recommendation approach has the potential to be extended beyond the design field to other academic disciplines. Ultimately, this research aims to improve accessibility to academic information and contribute to the development of a more open and efficient research environment.
