연구논문 : 학교 내 공식처벌이 청소년 비행에 미치는 영향: 자아낙인의 매개효과를 중심으로 = The Effect of Official Punishment in Schools on Juvenile Delinquency: The Mediating Role of Self-Labeling

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근 들어 점점 더 심각해지고 있는 청소년들의 비행 및 범죄를 예방하려는 목적으로 다시금 강력한 처벌이 그 수단으로써 논의되고 있다. 하지만 초기의 낙인이론가들은 사회의 공식적 기관이 비행행동을 저지른 사람에게 낙인효과를 주는 방식의 처벌을 가할 경우, 이를 통해 얻어지는 사회적 반응에 행위자가 적응하게 되면서 비행자로서의 정체성을 형성하게 되고, 결국 또 다른 이차적인 일탈행동을 야기할 수 있다고 보아, 공식적 처벌의 부정적인 영향에 대해 경고하였다. 이러한 측면에서 하루 중 대부분의 시간을 학교에서 보내는 청소년들에게는 학교는 가장 강력한 사회적 낙인을 부여할 수 있는 공간이 될 수 있으며, 학교에서 공식적 처벌을 통한 낙인을 부여받을 경우 비행자로서의 정체성 형성이 불가피할 것이다. 본 연구는 초기의 낙인이론이 제시한 바와 같이 공식처벌과 자아낙인, 비행의 시간적 인과관계가 유의미하게 나타날 것인지, 나타난다면 공식처벌의 비행에 대한 직접적인 영향력을 감안하고서도 자아낙인을 통한 매개효과가 유의미한지 학교환경 속에서 실증적으로 검증하는 것에 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 한국청소년정책연구원이 시행한「한국청소년패널」의 중2패널 자료 중에서 3차(고1), 4차(고2), 5차(고3) 데이터를 이용하여 자기회귀교차지연모형 분석을 시행 하였다. 분석결과, 공식처벌과 자아낙인, 비행의 시간적 인과관계가 유의미하게 나타났으며, 자아낙인이 학교로부터 받는 공식 처벌과 비행행동의 관계에 있어서 유의미한 매개효과를 갖는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 바람직한 청소년정책과 후속연구를 위한 시사점을 논하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The zero tolerance type of tough policy has been prevailing in our society and has gained popularity among researchers and the public alike. Such anapproach is based on the notion that tough punishment prevent delinquent adolescents from committing additional delinquency and crime, which is based on the deterrence theory. However, labeling theory insists that the unintendedprimary delinquency may be developed into secondary deviance through self-labeling after those juveniles having been punished by official agencies. Considering juveniles’ situation in school, it is natural to assume that official punishment in school may bring strong self-labeling related to delinquent identity as the youth spend most of their time in school. It appears that there has not been enough attempt to investigate these causal relationships in our school settings. Based on the early labeling theory, current study attempted to fill this void by examining the causal relationships among official punishment, self-labeling, and delinquent behavior of adolescents in high school. By using the three waves of the Korean Youth Panel Survey data, we employed the Autoregressive Cross-Lagged Model which considers time effects and causal relationships at the same time. The result revealed statistically significant paths from official punishment to delinquencies via self-labeling. Additionally, the mediating effect of self-labeling was also statistically significant. Suggestions for policies and future research were discussed based on the findings.
